County Mayo’s Great Western Greenway, the wonderful long-distance off-road cycling and walking route, has now got a rival with the opening of a similar visitor attraction in the sunny south-east, the Waterford Greenway. Forty-six kilometres of wonderfully peaceful and safe cycling and walking trail will now take you from the Waterford City quays to the pretty seaside town of Dungarvan along an old railway line.
The first 23 kilometres allows cyclists and walkers to enjoy a beautiful journey from Kilmacthomas to Dungarvan with the other half of the Greenway due to open shortly. Travel along the disused railway line, along 3 tall viaducts, through a long spooky tunnel and make your way from the river in Waterford city to the sea at Dungarvan in perfect peace and safety. A great family attraction for visitors to Waterford, the Greenway is fully accessible for every person and doesn’t allow any motorised vehicles or horses. Touring the Waterford Greenway
There’s plenty to see when you spend some time on the Waterford Greenway. You don’t quite follow the old Waterford railway route the whole way so the route is a mixture of coastal and inland parts but there are some stunning views along the way.
You’ll pass some remnants of the old railway infrastructure like the Durrow/Stradbally signal box along the Waterford Greenway but you don’t have to worry, no trains will be chasing you off the line! You can though wave at the Waterford & Suir Valley Heritage Railway as it chugs past on a nearby train line.
You’ll walk or cycle along the famous River Suir, pass the amazing Mount Congreve and the incredible gardens there. You can stop off there, the gardens are directly accessible from the Waterford Greenway. Further on you’ll cross over the Durrow 7-arch and Kilmacthomas 8-arch stone viaducts, engineering marvels in their own right, before entering the dark of the brick-lined tunnel of Ballyvoyle. Never fear, though, when you emerge out into the light you’ll be stunned by the superb views of the Comeragh Mountains and Dungarvan Bay ahead of you.
Spend some time too in the pleasant coastal town of Dungarvan. If you’re doing this in summer, Dungarvan is a top-class water sports centre so if you want to go windsurfing or surfing when you’re in County Waterford, it’s a great place to start.
